MULTICULTURAL COMPETENCE WORKSHOP
K-12 EDUCATORS
RATIONALE:
Sensitivity to culture and multicultural competence are no longer evidence
of a “nice” person; they are life skills necessary to do any job well and to
ensure organizational success. These are crucial skills given the major
demographic transformation of our local community within the greater
Reading and Berks County.
OBJECTIVES:
- Recognize the demographic changes and escalating diversification
of K-12 public schools
- Identify specific unintended conflicts deriving from cultural
differences
- Introduce the basic domains of the Multicultural Competence Model
and develop productive skills to interact more effectively with
culturally different students and parents.
ACTIVITIES
This interactive workshop will help K-12 educators and administrators
improve their communication with culturally diverse students and their
families. Participants will come out with a research-informed framework to
better understand the cultural differences between students’ home and
the classroom. Effective intercultural skills will be presented through critical
incidents. The cultural knowledge and interpersonal skills learned in this
session will allow K-12 educators begin their personal and institutional
journey towards multicultural competency. This will also enhance
participants’ skills in providing comprehensive and inclusive services to all
students and their families.
RESOURCES PROVIDED BY CLIENT:
